Crossword tips for beginners
- Start with the clues you know and fill in those words first; the crossing letters make the rest easier.
- Count the letters. The number in brackets after each clue is the length of the answer.
- Watch for plurals and tenses. A clue in the plural usually has an answer ending in S; a past-tense clue often ends in ED.
- Take a break. Answers often come to mind when you come back to a puzzle later.
Crosswords and the brain
Word puzzles are a pleasant way to practice vocabulary, memory and focus. Many activity programs use crosswords as a group activity: one person reads a clue aloud and the room solves it together.
